About the Centre
Centre for Drug Discovery and Development was established in 2013 with the goal to explore natural resources for anti infective drug discovery with special focus on Tuberculosis and HIV. Since relocating to the Sathyabama Research Park (3rd Floor) in 2015, the Centre has broadened its research scope to encompass a wide range of disciplines such as microbial bioprospecting, infectious diseases, Anti TB and antiviral screening, Translational Immunology and vaccine development, viral proteomics, natural product chemistry, biofilm biology, seaweed research, cryosphere microbial research. Driven by both hard work and smart strategies of faculty members with the support of our management, the Centre continues to reach new heights through consistent research excellence. CDDD has been supported by prestigious funding agencies such as DST, DBT, NCPOR, ICMR, and MoES, further empowering its diverse research endeavors. The MHRD-SPARC initiative has fostered productive collaborations with international academic and research institutions, opening new avenues for global partnerships. The Centre houses two state-of-the-art BSL-II Plus facility, dedicated to the development of novel therapeutics against life-threatening diseases such as Tuberculosis, AIDS, Dengue, and chronic disorders including cancer and diabetes. CDDD also emphasizes sustainable innovation, leading to the development and patenting of eco-friendly products for societal benefit. With translational biomedicine and vaccine research at the forefront, the Centre is actively engaged in developing vaccine candidates for emerging and re-emerging viral outbreaks, contributing significantly to pandemic preparedness and global health initiatives. The Centre also organizes global health awareness programs focused on infectious diseases and public health challenges, ensuring community engagement and scientific outreach. With an accomplished team of scientists and research professionals, the Centre has achieved 225 journal publications, 65 book chapters and 7 books. The Centre’s ongoing initiatives span in-house and seed-funded projects, student research, consultancy services, invited lectures, and collaborative research programs, reflecting a vibrant and dynamic research ecosystem.

Semi-Prep-LC MSD

Semi-preparative HPLC coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS) at our centre serves as a powerful, central analytical platform with wide-ranging applications across sectors such as environmental science, health and biomedical research, forensics, food and beverage testing, industry, agriculture, and biopharmaceutics. In environmental monitoring, it enables precise detection of xenobiotics and pollutants in water and soil. In the biomedical field, it aids in purifying and identifying biomolecules like amino acids, peptides, and nucleotides. Forensic applications benefit from its sensitivity in analysing psychoactive substances and biological fluids. The food industry uses it to detect additives, sweeteners, and pesticide residues, while industrial sectors utilize it for effluent testing. In agriculture, it helps identify and characterize pesticides and herbicides, and in biopharmaceutics, it supports antibody testing, chiral drug analysis, and peptide fingerprinting. This system’s ability to purify and characterize compounds simultaneously makes it indispensable for both research and applied sciences.
Flash Chromatography for natural product separation
Flash chromatography is a versatile technique primarily used for the rapid purification of organic compounds, making it an essential tool in natural product research, medicinal chemistry, and synthetic organic chemistry. It is commonly applied to separate complex mixtures such as plant extracts, reaction intermediates, and bioactive fractions based on polarity or molecular interactions. In pharmaceutical development, flash chromatography aids in isolating lead compounds and purifying synthetic drug candidates. Its scalability and speed also make it valuable in food science for separating additives and contaminants, and in academic or industrial labs for routine purification tasks. The technique supports both analytical and preparative workflows, serving as a cost-effective alternative to more sophisticated chromatographic methods for initial compound enrichment.
