Frequently Asked Questions

For every calendar year the Ph.D programme will be started twice i.e January and July. The dates for submission of Application will be published in website (In September for January admission & in February for July admission). All the eligible candidates will be called for screening. Admissions will be made based on the recommendations by the expert committee. The screening will be normally in the month of November and April.

For M.Phil degree holders also, there is no change in the duration of Course [Full time – 3 years, Part time( Internal/External) - 4 years]. But the number of course work will be two for M.Phil degree holders.

Processing fees(non refundable)= Rs.2000/- [To be paid along with application form]

First DC Meeting fee = Rs.25,000/- [To be paid during First DC Meeting]

Part time (Int./Ext.)Semester fees = Rs.25,000/-[To be paid for each semester]

Full time Semester fees = Rs.30,000/-[To be paid for each semester]

Comprehensive exam fees Rs.10,000/-[To be paid during Comprehensive Meeting]

Extension fee = Rs.10,000/- [To be paid during Extension meeting, if maximum duration is exceeded – in spells of every six months]

Synopsis fees = Rs.10,000/- [To be paid during synopsis meeting]

Thesis Evaluation fee = Rs.15,000/- [To be paid during submission of Thesis]

Viva Voce fee = Rs.10,000/- [To be paid during Defending Viva Voce]

All fees should be paid by DD / Online mode drawn in favour of Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology payable at Chennai.

The application for Ph.D can be downloaded from the website . The filled in application should be forwarded to Director (Research) along with the following enclosures.

1. Attested xerox copy of UG Degree certificate

2. Attested xerox copy of PG Degree certificate

3. Attested xerox copy of UG Mark sheets

4. Attested xerox copy of PG Mark sheets

5. Abstract (one page write up about your proposed research work, signed by Supervisor)

6. DD/Online mode drawn in favour of Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology payable at Chennai for Rs.2000/-(Processing fees ).

The candidates those who have applied for the Ph.D programme after scrutinization will be called if they are found eligible. They have to appear for Entrance Examination followed by a power point presentation of their proposed research work in front of the experts. The selection of the candidates is purely based on their performance in Entrance and Presentation.

The processing fee is utilized for Scrutinization of application, conduct of examination and presentation after which the results are declared. If not selected, the processing fee will not be refunded

After scrutinization, if found eligible will be called for screening process, candidates should attend the screening meeting. If not attending the meeting, processing fee will not be refunded.

Before the doctoral committee meeting, research scholar has to visit and discuss with various departments of Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University), regarding the subjects (which are related to their field of research) and syllabus which are available in PG Courses and submit it to the supervisor. This will be helpful for the Supervisor and Doctoral Committee Members to decide the course work during the First Doctoral Committee Meeting. Research scholars are also requested to submit their Post Graduate level subjects and syllabus to Doctoral Committee which will be helpful to them for not repeating the same as a course work subject.

The First Doctoral Committee meeting should be completed within one month on receipt of the official admission letter with prior intimation to Director (Research) failing which Ph.D provisional registration will be liable for cancellation.

All PG holders have to write 4 course works. All M.Phil holders have to write 2 course works. All course work should be in the Post Graduate level offered in Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) Research Methodology Tools and Techniques is a compulsory course work for all.

The Research scholars are requested to submit Form 2(Application for Course work permission for Research scholars) to Director (Research) to attend the course work classes at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University). Last date for submitting the Form 2 will be intimated in the website. At the end of the semester research scholars have to produce the attendance certificate from the concerned Head of the Departments which will facilitate the Research scholar to attend the examination. A minimum of 80% attendance is compulsory to appear for the examination. In the case of Directed Study the attendance certificate should be obtained from the Supervisor.

Yes. The Course work prescribed by the Doctoral Committee can be studied from any other recognized universities in India by producing an official letter of acceptance from the COE of the University in which the candidate wants to do the course work and an official letter of acceptance for the attendance certificates from the Principal of the Engineering College in which the course work will be taken. You have to produce a course completion certificate with marks from the Controller of Examinations of that university.

The Syllabus for the Directed Study will be framed by the supervisor by taking research area of the Research Scholar into account and should be approved by Director (Research). After getting approval, an official letter will be issued from research office. Only then candidate can register for examination for this coursework.

A research scholar can do a maximum of one directed study as per the Ph.D Regulations.

You can continue your research work as per the directions of your supervisor. You have to submit a xerox copy of your course completion certificate to Research office which can be obtained from the office of the Controller of Examinations.

All research scholars will be called for a presentation and to submit their six months report [Form 1 and a writeup about the research work with publication details along with semester fees Rs.25000/- (for candidates admitted from January 2019) during the month of January, July of every calendar year. The dates for submitting 6 months report and presentation will be announced in the Research website.

After the completion of prescribed course work with minimum 2 years duration and a maximum of 3 years duration your supervisor can request the Director (Research) for confirmation of Provisional Registration beyond which the candidate is liable for Cancellation of registration.

After the completion of minimum period [Full Time: 3years, Part Time (Internal/External) 4 years] with the required research & publications, supervisor can request the Director (research) a letter with details about the publications made. Based on the request if candidate  comply with publication norms, the research scholar should submit the following details.


1. Reprints of all published papers in journals and conferences with attendance certificate in conference.

2. Originality of Research, Research Database details.

3. Attested copy of UG, PG degree certificates.

4. Fee paid details till date.

After completion of synopsis meeting Thesis should be submitted within three months beyond which a penalty have to be paid till six months of time period. If not submitted beyond six months the registration is liable for cancellation.
